Don’t Let Bad Credit Stop You from Getting the Student Loans You Need

There are many things in a person’s life that can throw you into a credit rating nightmare. It really doesn’t take much, an illness or a loss of work which lasts for more than a couple weeks is devastating to most households. When an individual finds that they have indeed ran into getting dings on their credit report, it can become difficult to get loans of any type, and that includes student loans. Those people who have found that their job has ended and need to go back to school are finding it increasingly hard to return to school to get retrained for another occupation.

If you are looking at heading out to college, and have credit problems, there is hope for you, as there are loans for which you can get approved. These bad credit loans are actually easier to qualify for than the regular loans which require a good credit score. As with any loan, you should make certain that the loans you get are something that you will be able to pay back, or you will find yourself in a bigger credit mess.

If you have less than perfect credit, your first stop for a school loan should be the federal student educational loan program. You can get approved for some federal loans without having to pass any major credit checks, so they are easier to get approved. The two types of federal loans are the Perkins federal loan and the Stafford federal loan. They come both subsidized and unsubsidized form. The repayment of these loans is deferred until the borrower is finished with school, so they do not have the burden of repaying the loans hanging over their heads all through college. It is also possible for parents to borrow from these programs on the behalf of their children.

The federal loan programs are only available to those individuals who are not from an affluent background. If you need to get a bad credit loan for college and do not qualify because of family income, then you will have to apply to private programs which offer bad credit college loans. Private loans can be taken out in either secured or non secured form. Of course if you do not have the collateral to offer which equates to covering the loan, you will have to go the unsecured loan route. If you need to use the unsecured option, you may have to get a cosigner to qualify.

If you have bad credit and need to go to college, there are student loans that you can get to make your college dreams a reality. Take the time to speak with a financial aid counselor in your school.
